5 Ways to Improve Your Mood Instantly
So, here I am, having a [pretty] normal week, and then I wake up feeling like everything is falling apart, completely derailed, and ready to throw the covers [back] over my head. Most of the time, it's because I woke up in my head and laid there until I fell deeper into the sunken place of my thoughts. Not a good feeling first thing in the morning, but I know we've all been there, and when you're feeling like this, it's hard to bounce back and get back on your feet, but it's possible. Here are five ways to improve your mood instantly.
Identify why you're in a bad mood
The hardest, but most important step to improve your mood is to identify why you're in one. And from experience, I will be the one to tell you; you will deny you're in one, but it's important to get clear on how you're feeling before you move forward to avoid saying or doing anything inappropriate or harmful. A simple way to consciously identify how you're feeling is to ask yourself these questions:
Why am I in a bad mood?
How do I expect to feel?
What happened instead?
Which one of my beliefs changed?
It's a daunting task and takes peeling back the layers, but once you're able to identify how you're feeling, you'll be able to move freely with a clearer consciousness and mood.
Practice your routine
If you don't have a spiritual or mindful routine, now is the perfect time to create one. Whether it's reading a book, journaling, or meditation, when you're feeling low, it's an opportunity to practice your routine and center yourself to shift your energy and how you're feeling. To keep my mood in check, I practice meditation and keep a daily gratitude list. When I feel my energy shift towards negativity, I revisit my list or find a moment to sit in stillness—I encourage you to do the same.
Numerous studies have shown that daylight can naturally improve your mood, reduce your sleep problems, and keep you alert and productive. So, if you're looking to improve your mood quickly, I encourage you to take a walk outside; if you're unable to get outdoors, sit by a nearby window or open up all the shades and shutters in your home. Whether you need a mood boost or battling seasonal depression, exposure to the sun will boost your serotonin production while reliving your feeling of stress and re-energizing your body.
Talk to someone
To put your feelings into perspective and separate yourself from thoughts, it's important to talk to someone, and obtain advice and support. Don't be afraid to be honest with yourself and others; when someone asks you how you are, don't just say you're okay, be honest and share how you're [really] feeling. Also, don't be afraid to ask and receive help; if you feel uncomfortable receiving it from family or friends, phone into a hotline or therapist. Help to shift your mood, especially if it's reoccurring, it out there.
When it's all said and done, the best way to improve your mood instantly is to have fun! When you're having fun, doing everything you enjoy doing, it's almost impossible to be in a bad mood. So, that thing you enjoy doing, do it NOW and watch how your mood shifts.
