We've all been in the space of excitement, ready to start our new careers or projects; we grabbed our planners, wrote down everything we need to do and then life happened. You receive bad news, a task doesn't happen the way you planned, or your career is now at a halt. We've all been there more than most would like to admit, but no one said it would be easy. As a creative, I'm constantly battling with pushing myself not to give up and wanting to in the same thought; mainly because things get hard and I'm striving for perfection—which doesn't exist. It's always interesting to me how our minds work; one day everything seems to be on track and going just the way we want them to, and others, nothing is right, we hate everything—I know you can relate. But this is life; some days we are going to feel inspired, positive, and ready to attack the day; others we're going to feel like everything and everyone is working against us, but as things happen, we can't let them get in the way of our goals. Here are seven ways you can accomplish your goals when you feel like life is crushing you.
Why you started
When you first decided to take on a goal or career, what was your reason why? Did it bring you joy? Was it to bring someone else joy or help them? There will always be a reason or justification of why you started; you must identify that and return to it when you feel like giving up. Push through the difficult times and remind yourself that giving up isn't an option because of your why.
I have my why written down on a whiteboard on the side of my desk; when things get difficult, I look over at that and remind myself that the work is a part of the process and all bigger than me.
There are two things to understand when it comes to timing; (1) it's constant, and (2) everything revolves around time. If you're going to invest your time into anything, you want to spend it where you'll receive the greatest return on your energy. If you feel like you have no time to do anything, it's because you're investing your time in the wrong things. The simplest way to get over this is to understand that time is a constant, and it doesn't change, but what does change is how you use it. Plan your days and weeks in advance, so you understand what you have in the coming days, and the time it takes to complete each task and activity.
Also, know that everything happens when the time is right; you may feel like it's the right time for something, but the universe will guide you and bring what you need in that moment—not before or after.
Many times things are not happening or not happening how we want them to because we don't know what we [actually] want. You have to be clear; clear to the point that you've outlined every task, the process to get that task done, and the time it will take. I also like to give each task a why or an objective; this allows me to stay on track with my initial why. When you do this and outline every step, including the small ones, it's much easier to pick up and keep going.

Having a positive mindset is by far one of the most important things to have when you feel like life is crushing you, but it's not easy to do. It's like trying to stay calm while you're running out of a burning building—it's just not happening. However, you have to do everything in your power to remain positive; positivity will help you conquer your goals even when you feel like you're crushed. Also, negativity breeds negativity; if you think negative, it will only make the situation worse.
Become a priority
Most of us put everyone before ourselves, and no matter how many times we hear that we must put ourselves first, we never adhere to it. I understand the guilt, and yes it's a beautiful thing to take care of others, but you're doing more harm to yourself and goals when you put anything or anyone before you. It's a habit most can't let go of, but allow time for daily self-care, that doesn't involve anyone else. Create positive habits that allow you to take care of yourself first; you're too important not to.
A few of my favorite self-care activities are; cooking, reading, painting, and binging on TV.
If you don't appreciate what you have in life, there is no way the universe will bring more to you. Change your mindset to be grateful for the people, things, and opportunities you currently have; it's that simple.
I keep a daily gratitude journal that I write in every morning; this helps me focus my mindset on those things I currently have while I'm working to achieve more. I recommend writing down three-to-five things you are grateful for daily; do this and what how it shifts your day.
Do the work
The work is not easy, it's not pretty, and sometimes it's not fun, but it must be done. We live in an instant gratification world where people want the results and success without putting in the work, but be clear, you can't expect year ten results doing year one work.
We all will have our own experiences and struggles, that's just life, but this is what shapes us and the work we do. Do not allow these struggles to crush you, use them as a lesson and motivation to achieve your goals, the choice is yours; your life is depending on it.
