Menswear Recap [VMA Red Carpet 2015]
The 2015 VMA Awards kicked off this past Sunday, and I have to say they were a complete snooze fest (insert Kanye sleeping gif)! From the fashion to the performances, nothing impressed me or kept me entertained. There were a few highlights like Ciara in Alexandre Vauthier (she stole the night), but when it came to menswear, what happened?! I tuned in mainly for the pre-show, and below I am recapping some of my favorite and not-so-favorite menswear looks.
Tweet or comment me your thoughts from the show! @samcperry
If you tuned into the pre-show, did you notice that the red carpet and Moonman received a makeover this year? This was thanks to Jeremy Scott, and while the updates looked great, I hated his look! Wearing the same cropped blazer silhouette from last year's VMAs, Scott looked like a TV censor. I am all for having fun with fashion, but I hate a gimmick.
I love Miguel's style. He never looks average, and isn't afraid of taking a risk. Mixing high and low, Miguel wore customized Levis with a Haider Ackermann Blazer and YSL woven. Giving modern day Prince, Miguel doesn't receive the style credit he deserves. He is definitely on my radar as someone to watch.
John Legend does menswear so well. My favorite couple and the best-dressed couple of the night, John always focuses on fit - the most important quality in menswear. I love that he mixed sportswear (basic t-shirt and leather pants) with a cropped tuxedo jacket. Did you notice the tail? Classic menswear!
The Biebs showed up with a new hair style that everyone hated! Unfortunately, that took away from his look - which was completely on trend. Nothing exciting, Justin wore distressed skinny jeans with a polka dot woven and leather jacket. I wasn't particularly a fan of the jacket, it looked like cheap leather or PU. His look gave me
Pharrell is one of my style inspirations. He stays true to himself and never conforms to what others are doing creatively or in fashion. Fully on trend in head-to-toe denim, his look is classic menswear. He paired the looked with croc embossed boots - which may be a part of his collaboration with Timberland.
In the past, Kanye was it for me in terms of music and style. Now, not so much. WHAT WAS HE WEARING?! An oversized sweat suit is not what I expected him to show up in, especially since he was receiving the highest honor of the night. Undoubtedly one of the most influential of our generation, I want more from Kanye. He tries too hard to be 'fashion', and I'm bored with his rants! I understand his minimal approach to fashion, but for me this look is completely off.
