Why You Need a Grey Turtleneck

The reputation of the turtleneck has gotten a [serious] makeover the past few years. I have to admit, I refused to wear them in the past because they reminded me of Mr. Rogers—old, scratchy neck, and pipe smokers, but now, I can't get enough of them. Today, they're a great way to keep your system modern, yet retro-inspired.

Turtlenecks are casual enough to throw on with jeans, but also enough to get you through a suit-and-tie dress code. But before you go out to buy one, here are a few things to keep in mind and how I styled mine.

I. Keep the color dark

Of course, there are a ton of colors, but if you're just starting out, keep it dark. My go-to color is charcoal grey and the color I encourage you to buy because it's the perfect tone under any blazer or paired with denim.

II. Thin is better than thick

Because turtlenecks are [usually] worn as a layering piece, keep it thin. It will eliminate any bulk and keep your silhouette slim and clean.

III. Save your coins

Turtlenecks are a classic piece in menswear, and because of that, you can find one at every price point. Don't spend a fortune on one if you're a newbie; go for styles from Uniqlo or Hugo Boss.
